At first she's a cocktail waitress, working the crowd. At Platinum Club they have these special drinks. You are talking with one of the club's entertainers and a pretty girl comes right up to you to offer you a special drink at a reduced price. First time I saw Amanda I saw her going around the room with a tray of what looked like test tubes full of a bright colored liquid. The guys loved her. "Now that gal is a real mixer," I thought.
"It's not going to be long and she will be up on that stage dancing. She's got the looks.
She knows how to get the men to tip her. She's going to make a bundle."
But that just hasn't happened. Not yet and it might never come to pass. I started seeing more of Amanda behind the bar. Then one night, she was my bartender. I had brought in a date into Platinum's VIP room bar. The girl had worked several years ago for another club and I had mixed feelings about taking her out in public again. We sat at a table overlooking the stages below us. One of the prettiest dancers in the club joined us. Not just one of the prettiest. One of the smartest, most personable, most everything. She asked me to buy her a drink so I got her one along with a beer for myself and another whiskey sour for my date. Come to think of it, that was the second drink I got the Platinum dancer. Amanda asked me to join her at the bar for a moment.
"Tell Canssandra I want to talk with her," she told me. Returning to my table I asked the Platinum dancer to go to the bar and see what Amanda wants. I then watched the two young women converse at the bar. And then it hit me. The Platinum dancer was only twenty, having six months to go before she hit the legal drinking age.
"I can't drink anymore," the Platinum dancer said to my date and me, when she returned to our table. What impressed me was that I don't think Amanda's any older than the Platinum dancer. And if she is, not by much. There was however an acceptance that Amanda's word was law from the Platinum entertainer. Who is, as I mentioned, a very bright girl and pretty mature for her age. Obviously the two young women respected one another.
The Platinum dancer left us when she was called down to perform at the stage and we were joined by another girl who sat with us for a good half an hour before the DJ called her downstairs. By this time my date was on her fifth whiskey sour and wanted to sit at the bar. She then started pestering me with all kinds of questions about her breasts and how she thought she should have a boob job. A little three sheets to the wind myself, I wound up eating a cherry off my date's breast.
"Hey, can we eat a cherry off your breast?" my date asked Amanda.
"No, "Amanda replied.
My date then asked her if she could eat a cherry (she was getting the cherries from her whiskey sours) off her hand. Again, Amanda refused her. Her last refusal settled it. My date shut up. Amanda had indulged her when she had me suck a cherry off her breast. (I'm still embarrassed over that one). But it was too much when my date tried to drag her into our crazy antics. The firm voice of authority spoke out from behind the bar which stopped my date in her tracks without argument or incident.
The bartender has a certain amount of authority in a club such as Platinum. If she gives a customer too much alcohol and he winds up killing himself on the way home, the club (and the bartender) might just wind up in a law suit. If a fight breaks out (which rarely happens in the Platinum Club), the bartender is usually the one called upon to put a stop to it as fast and as cleanly as possible. The bartender is often looked to for advice and for service.
And here's this pretty young thing responsible for all of that. Give her more hours behind that bar is what I say. She's damn good. She lets people get away with just enough to have some serious fun but she knows exactly where to draw the line when she has to it. What amazes me is she learned all of that so fast.
