Whether you read about it or watch camera reviews on YouTube, the Nikon Z8 big sound is never mentioned.
The Nikon Z8 big sound comes from two wondrous microphones housed in the Nikon Z8’s camera body. Most digital cameras contain just one microphone, so the sound -coming out of such microphones is way too soft and it sounds rather tinny to my ears. I would think the best cameras coming out of Canon and Sony also contain two microphones. And perhaps their sound is equally good as Nikon’s.
Well, I don’t know about that. But that doesn’t matter because I am a Nikon guy. All my lenses are Nikon, and each one of them is terrific.
My first Nikon was the Nikon Dx-1 and in its day, it was the ultimate camera for professional digital photographers. Now Canon might well have had a camera that was equally good. But once I bought my Nikon D-1 X all the other professional photographers I knew carried Nikon D-1 X’s. Not Canons.
I not only love the Nikon Z8 big sound, I also love Nikon’s menus and controls.
But that’s probably because after buying my Nikon D-1x, I bought a Nikon D 300. Then I bought the Nikon D 750 and got a lot of great videos out of it before trading the d750’s camera body for a D780. But when Tom the owner of Best Camera told me the Nikon Z7 mirrorless camera offered a lot better focus for shooting video I bought it and replaced all my lenses with three Nikon Z Lense: the Nikon Z-24-70 2.8 lens, the 20 mm Nikon Z 1.8 wide angle lens. And the Nikon Z 17-28 2.8 lens. I found that the menus and controls of all the Nikon camera bodies were all pretty much the same. Although each new model offered a few improvements over the previous model.
I do want to mention several more things about the Nikon Z8 big sound. I can easily adjust the volume of both microphones by hitting an easily accessible menu button. There is also an input receptacle that I often us to plug in an external microphone receiver. This receiver fits on my Nikon’s hot shoe which I use for the external flash. The manufacturer of my external microphone has paired it with a small clip-on transmitter that communicates with the receiver through a wireless connection.
Mali for example loves to sing almost as much as she loves to dance. So I will often have Mali clip the small wireless transmitter onto her clothing. This results in a setup that emphasizes her voice over the background music. However, it for any reason Mali goes to the toilet or leaves other people I am videoing there will be no sound in the video or if there is any sound at all it will be severely muted. And although I can adjust the sound level of this external microphone setup, I won’t get the Nikon Z8 big sound I get from Nikon’s pair of internal microphones.
